Zothwane Likens Mahala To Raphael Chukwu

Richards Bay co-coach Papi Zothwane has hailed striker Lundi Mahala as a “rare breed”, comparing the in-form forward to former Mamelodi Sundowns goal machine Raphael Chukwu.

Mahala has emerged as a key figure for Richards Bay this season after joining the club during the off-season as a replacement for Yanela Mbuthuma, who secured a move to Orlando Pirates.

Mahala Making an Instant Impact at Richards Bay

The 20-year-old striker has quickly made his mark, most notably scoring a hat-trick in the Nedbank Cup round of 32 as Richards Bay defeated Siwelele on penalties two weeks ago.

Mahala has featured in 20 matches across all competitions so far, scoring five goals and establishing himself as a crucial attacking option.

Zothwane Explains “Rare Type of Striker” Comparison

“Lundi Mahala is a young boy, very energetic,” said Zothwane.

“At our club, one of the main criteria when signing players is to bring in those who are still hungry and want to make a name for themselves.

“I think what has helped him most is that he understands why he is here. He comes from the Eastern Cape, where he did not get an opportunity at Chippa United.

“But he has been given that opportunity at Richards Bay. He is very focused. He is a rare type of striker — the Chukwu kind. There is a lot we have had to work on with him, especially his composure in the box, which was something he lacked.”

Chukwu, who had two spells at Sundowns, scored 51 goals in 113 appearances for the Brazilians and remains one of the club’s most prolific strikers.

Zothwane, who also represented Sundowns during his playing career, believes Mahala is steadily progressing.

“Slowly but surely, he is getting there. He is still far from where he wants to be, but he is improving. With players like Knox Mutizwa around him, he is learning.

“He is creating healthy competition with Knox. If he continues performing consistently, he will keep growing. I believe he can become one of the best strikers.”
