Gabriel Praises Richards Bay After Dramatic Nedbank Cup Win Over Siwelele

Richards Bay co-coach Ronnie Gabriel heaped praise on his players after they edged Siwelele in the Nedbank Cup round-of-32 clash on Sunday, admitting the dramatic encounter was not good for his health due to its rollercoaster nature.

The Natal Rich Boys came from behind to draw 3–3 with Siwelele before clinching victory in a penalty shoot-out at Dr Molemela Stadium on Sunday night.

Lundi Mahala once again stole the spotlight for Richards Bay, scoring a hat-trick to haul his side back from the brink of defeat in Bloemfontein.

Richards Bay’s progression means that three KwaZulu-Natal-based teams in the Betway Premiership have advanced to the Nedbank Cup round of 16, with Golden Arrows and Durban City also booking their places in the next stage.

Speaking ahead of the match, Gabriel had expressed hopes of replicating their impressive Carling Knockout Cup run, where they reached the semi-finals before losing to eventual champions Orlando Pirates.

“It was a rollercoaster of emotions,” Gabriel said.

“Once we were down, then we were up, then down again, and then up once more. But going into the game, we knew we were coming up against very strong opposition—a quality team with quality players and great depth.

“We anticipated a tough encounter, and that is exactly what we got. It took a lot of guts, determination and courage to come away with a victory, especially from such a young group of players.

“They performed fantastically well. They showed heart, desire, and character. They showed what it means to fight for the Richards Bay badge, and we must commend them for the fantastic display.”

The Natal Rich Boys will discover their opponents in the Nedbank Cup round of 16 when the draw is conducted on Wednesday.
