Richards Bay chairman Sifiso Biyela has paid an emotional tribute to the club’s supporters following their highly anticipated return to the newly upgraded Umhlathuze Sports Complex this season.
The move marked the Natal Rich Boyz’ first true home fixture in northern KwaZulu-Natal since August 2021, ending a multi-year stadium closure enforced by extensive infrastructure development, as they were playing matches in Durban.
Since resuming matches at the stadium, Richards Bay made full use of their home-ground advantage, losing just one league game there this season. That defeat came against Orbit College FC in October.
The goal scored in that match was also controversial, as Monnapule Saleng — now with Mamelodi Sundowns — appeared to be offside.
Despite their impressive home record, the Natal Rich Boyz missed out on a lucrative top-eight finish in the Betway Premiership following a 1-1 draw against Sekhukhune United at home on Saturday.
A Message from the Chairman
Addressing the crowd after the final whistle, Biyela—who also serves as a Premier Soccer League Executive Committee (PSL EXCO) member—expressed deep gratitude for the local faithful.
“Since we returned from playing our games in Durban and came back to Richards Bay, we truly felt the support from you guys,” said Biyela on the club’s website.
“We had never experienced support like this before. The way our fans dedicated themselves to the club — not only by attending matches but also through activations around town encouraging people to come and watch — was incredible.
“We really appreciate everything you have done. Please give yourselves a round of applause for that.
“Even though the weather was not ideal, we are grateful that you still came out in numbers to support the club. We also want to thank the technical team, the players, and everyone who contributed throughout the season.”
The incredible reception in Zululand translated directly to blockbuster matchday metrics. Blockbuster clashes against South Africa’s ‘Big Three’—Orlando Pirates, Kaizer Chiefs, and Mamelodi Sundowns—all sold out well in advance.
Crucially, the Natal Rich Boyz remained unbeaten across all of those high-profile encounters. In an impressive display of resilience, no single top-flight team managed to complete a league double over Richards Bay this season.
The club will now conclude their 2025/26 Betway Premiership campaign next weekend with an away trip against bottom-of-the-table Magesi FC at the Seshego Stadium.
“That is why we took this opportunity to thank you,” added Biyela.
“Of course, I am disappointed that we could not win the game. But I believe the players gave everything they had to try and secure the victory. Unfortunately, it just was not meant to be.”
