“From the NFD to the World Cup!” — Meet the Richards Bay Superfan Jetting Off to Mexico with Bafana Bafana

Richards Bay FC superfan Xolani Khanyile says his dream has finally come true after being confirmed as one of the 19 lucky winners heading to Mexico to support Bafana Bafana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, alongside Deputy Minister Peace Mabe, officially concluded the final phase of the Mzansi to the World Cup Lucky Fan Competition on Wednesday.

The selected supporters, who achieved the highest scores in a rigorous soccer trivia competition, will travel to Monterrey to watch South Africa’s crucial Group A showdown against South Korea next week Thursday.

This cohort forms the second batch of South African fans flying to North America, following the group that witnessed Bafana’s opening tournament clash against Mexico at the iconic Estadio Azteca last week.

For Khanyile, a recognizable figure in the stands for the Natal Rich Boyz, this marks a monumental personal milestone.

“This will be my first time flying internationally,” an ecstatic Khanyile told the official Richards Bay club website.

“People might look at me and ask, ‘Who is Xolani Khanyile?’ But my answer is simple: I just love this sport too much.”

Khanyile’s journey with the KwaZulu-Natal outfit mirrors the club’s own fairytale rise through the ranks of South African football.

“I started following Richards Bay back when the club was still grinding in the National First Division (NFD),” Khanyile reflected.

“People know me now because the club is in the top flight, but back then, NFD games weren’t broadcast on television. I was there in the trenches. I remember the exact game against Cape Town Spurs in the 2021/22 season that secured our promotion to the top flight. I traveled to all the games when nobody knew who we were.”

“I want to take this opportunity to thank the Department of Sport for this life-changing chance to represent my club and country against South Korea,” he added.

Having missed out on the initial draw for the opening match in Mexico City, Khanyile trusted his instincts and entered the second phase of the competition with absolute certainty.

“I had total confidence,” he said.

“I have deep passion for this game, and I knew I had a genuine opportunity to be selected to represent the pride of Richards Bay in the World Cup stands.”

Determined to represent South Africa in true aesthetic style, Khanyile is calling on local designers and fans to assist him with traditional clothing for his stadium appearance in Monterrey.

“Whoever has traditional attire they can spare, please reach out. I am more than willing to advertise it on global television for free. I don’t want money; I just want the world to see what South Africa is made of,” Khanyile said.

“An opportunity like this is incredibly rare. It is a piece of history, and I hope this initiative continues for future generations. If it weren’t for the platform Richards Bay FC gave me, I wouldn’t be here today. I want to thank our chairman, Sifiso Biyela, the management, technical staff, players, and my fellow supporters who stand with this team through thick and thin.”
